Is Great Wolf Lodge Worth It? My Honest Take

One summer a couple years ago, literally every parent was talking about GWL, and even people on tables next to us at restaurants.

By now, many families have been to Great Wolf Lodge at least once. But after having been a couple times, here’s my honest take. Is it actually worth the money, or is it just a very expensive splash pad?

The Short Answer

Yes, it’s worth it – if you’ve never been before and you have kids who are at least 2 years old through to teenage years.

Yes, it’s worth it if you want a low effort weekend trip with other families. What You’re Actually Paying For

Of course, water park access is included with your room for the length of your stay. You can go whenever, however many times you want as long as it’s still open for the day.

If you go with other families, you don’t have to all do the same activities at the same time. Everyone can hang out and explore at their own pace.

There is free family entertainment in the form of dance parties and game night type events. While the dance party is a trap to get parents to purchase $40 light up bubble wands, the kids were happy to win a round of Bingo 🙂

Why It’s Worth It

It’s weather-proof. The water park is indoors and kept warm year-round, so you don’t have to worry about the weather ruining your plans. That’s a real advantage over an outdoor water park you can only use a few months a year.

It works across a wide age range. Toddlers have their own splash area, older kids have real slides and a wave pool. There’s also enough going on outside the water (ropes course, arcade, MagiQuest) when everyone’s had enough of water play.

Everything is under one roof. You’re not driving between a hotel and an attraction. Check in, put on swimsuits, and you’re already there. For a weekend trip with young kids, cutting out that logistics stress is worth something on its own.

Where It’s Not Worth It

The arcade will drain your wallet. There are LOTS of brightly lit, flashing games. It takes a lot of restraint to not give in to your kids. We spent $50 in about 45 minutes.

MagiQuest. The wands are expensive and they are completely useless outside of the parks. We managed to use them twice before I got sick of hanging onto them and threw them in the trash.

The gift shop is priced like an airport. You can buy everything you need on site, for about 3x or more the usual price (expected). Pack what you can ahead of time. Check this 🎒packing list.

Optional add-ons add up. Buffet breakfasts, cabana rentals, and premium activity passes are not necessary to have a good trip. Treat them as extras to consider once you know your budget, not default purchases.

Your kids are too small to enjoy most of the water park. This is the reason I won’t be going back for a few years. I realized that my kids, who aren’t tall enough for the slides, have just as much fun in any old pool.

Who It’s Best For

This is a strong fit for families with kids of different ages, roughly toddler age through younger teenage years. Younger kids get a dedicated area suited to them, and older kids can independently go on the big slides and adventure parks.

How to Get the Most Value Out of Your Stay

• Arrive early on check-in day. Most locations let you access the water park before your room is ready, so arrive when you’re ready.
• Stay until closing on your last day. Checkout doesn’t mean you have to leave the water park – use every hour you’re paying for.
• Bring your own snacks and drinks for the room. Outside food isn’t allowed in the water park itself, but it’s fine in your room. This is essential because there aren’t a ton of healthy options there.
• Book weekdays or off-season if your schedule allows. Rates and crowds both drop noticeably outside weekends and school breaks.

Is Great Wolf Lodge worth the hype? I’d say that it’s in between going for a day trip to Six Flags, and a full blown multiple-day trip to Disneyland. It’s an affordable weekend trip destination that you can go to with your family and friends without having to find and organize a shared airbnb with a pool.

What are the downsides of Great Wolf Lodge? Beyond the arcade and gift shop costs mentioned above, the two most common complaints are noise and crowds. An indoor water park full of excited kids is loud, and on a busy weekend it can feel crowded by mid-afternoon. It’s definitely not somewhere to go if you want some peace 🙂

How many days are enough for Great Wolf Lodge? For most families, two nights is the sweet spot. One night can feel rushed. Three or more nights only makes sense if you’re pairing it with other things to do nearby, since most kids hit a natural saturation point with the water park after a day and a half or so.

What is the ideal age for Great Wolf Lodge? Roughly toddler through 10 or 11 years old. Toddlers get their own scaled-down splash area and gentler activities like story time, older kids have full-size slides, a wave pool, and the ropes course to keep them busy, and there’s enough going on outside the water for a preteen not to get bored. Teenagers can still have a good time, but the overall experience is clearly designed with younger families as the priority.
