Where to stay in Joshua Tree (Best hotels for families)

If you’re planning a trip to Joshua Tree National Park, what you should know FIRST is that the North entrance (google maps) to the park has the shortest lines. This means you should stay in Twentynine Palms, or nearby Yucca Valley (~25 mins to the entrance).

So in this list, I’ve only included hotels and entire home rentals in Yucca Valley and Twentynine Palms. These all have rooms and capacity for 4+ people, and extra amenities like hot tub and outdoor pool.

Best Family-Friendly Hotels Near Joshua Tree National Park

Modern and stylish simplicity at a great price, with pool and hot tub

This is my personal favorite pick out of all the hotel options because not only is it great value, it has the best design and overall good vibes. Field Station is refreshingly modern and it is “outdoor themed”.

We stayed here recently and I was so impressed the whole time! The rooms are very spacious and thoughtfully designed (e.g. outlets on the bench, lots of pegs for hanging up stuff, lots of storage space at the bedside table, no carpet, nice toiletries, decent sized fridge etc.)

The bonus was a really nice gift shop with outdoor gear. I didn’t need to buy anything but they had nice stuff in stock. We got coffee☕ from the front desk every morning and it was decent. There is hot water, a microwave and filtered water dispenser for everyone to use 24/7. The lounge also has coloring pages, crayons, chess, backgammon and checkers! They also have a small selection of snacks for sale like beef jerky, and drinks.

My kids LOVED going to the pool🏊‍♂️ every afternoon after a hike in Joshua Tree. In the hour I sat at the pool, I saw 5 other families with young kids come and go. The pool also has a great view onto the mountains🤌 My family also loved the bocce ball court and cornhole. At night, there was a nice little group chatting by the fire pit.

• Food: Breakfast not included but there is a good on site cafe that serves decent food.

AutoCamp Joshua Tree

Airstream glamping with a pool – the most unique stay near the park

AutoCamp is in a completely different category from everything else on this list – you’re sleeping in a vintage-style Airstream trailer on the outskirts of Joshua Tree village, about a 10-minute drive to the West entrance of the park. It’s the kind of stay kids talk about for years. The property has a pool, fire pits, complimentary bikes, live music nights, and free morning coffee and granola. It’s glamping done properly.

• Average rate: ~$186–$511/night💰💰💰💰 (even the lowest rate sleeps 4 in an airstream, but you can go all the way to a larger airstream or proper cabin)
• Pool / hot tub: Outdoor pool (converts to hot tub in winter)
• Food: No full restaurant but morning coffee + granola included, baked goods and meals available from on-site caterer, full bar
• Other features: Free Wi-Fi, free parking, complimentary bikes, fire pit with s’mores kits, live music events, free yoga classes, resort fee covers most amenities
• Worth noting: Not ideal in peak summer heat (July/August) – the Airstreams get hot and AC can be loud. Spring and fall are the sweet spot for this property. Choose an airstream that is far away from the freeway to reduce noise from traffic.

Best for: Families who want a memorable experience over a conventional hotel stay, and are visiting in spring or fall rather than midsummer.

Fairfield Inn & Suites Twentynine Palms

All-suite hotel closest to the North entrance, with free breakfast

The Fairfield is the only all-suite hotel in the area, which makes a real difference when you’re sharing a room with kids. Every room has a separate living area with a sofa-sleeper, microwave, and fridge – essentially a small apartment. It’s also the closest major hotel to the North entrance.

• Average rate: ~$178–$394/night💰💰💰
• Pool / hot tub: Outdoor pool + whirlpool
• Food: Free buffet breakfast daily (hot options – eggs, sausage, waffles)
• Other features: 24-hour fitness center, free Wi-Fi, convenience store on site, free cribs available, supermarket directly across the street
• Worth noting: Paid parking ($15/night) – factor this into your budget. Walls can be thin according to some reviewers.
