Carmel-by-the-Sea is one of those places that feels almost too beautiful to be real – white sand beach, cypress trees, storybook cottages lining streets that don’t even have sidewalk numbers. It’s the kind of place where your kids will want to spend the whole morning building sandcastles and you might actually let them, because you’re too busy staring at the Pacific to argue.
What families need to know going in: Carmel is a small, romantic town at heart, and its hotels lean that way too. You won’t find sprawling kid-focused resorts in the village itself. What you will find are some genuinely lovely places to stay – inns with kitchenettes and pools, a historic hotel steps from the beach, and if you’re willing to drive about 10 minutes inland to Carmel Valley, a full ranch resort that’s one of the best family stays on the California coast. That’s the one I’d book for a special trip.

Carmel’s weather is similar to that of San Francisco – it sits in a unique microclimate on the Monterey Peninsula – famous for its summer fog, which can roll in hard through July and August and make beach mornings quite cold. That might surprise families expecting California sun. Here’s a season-by-season breakdown:
🌷Spring (March–May) – Best overall for families
Spring is the sweet spot. Temperatures are mild and comfortable, typically in the low-to-mid 60s, and the summer crowds haven’t arrived yet. Hotel rates are meaningfully lower than peak season, and the wildflowers along the coastal trails at Point Lobos are stunning. The Big Sur International Marathon happens in April and draws a festive energy to the region. If you’re trying to balance value, weather, and fewer crowds, late April or May is hard to beat.
